04 / Local data

MaxMind

GeoIP Anonymous IP identifies anonymizing network types through a downloadable database or web service. It suits local IP lookups and batch enrichment. A database classification is one input to an abuse decision, not a verdict on a person.

How scores work

38 criteria. Six scoring categories.

Zero paid placements. Products are compared on documented detection capabilities, handling of legitimate privacy traffic, integration, freshness, verdict depth and pricing. Placement cannot be purchased; the published weights give the most emphasis to detection coverage, false-positive handling and integration.

Coverage (30 percent), false positives (18 percent), integration (16 percent), freshness (14 percent), verdict depth (12 percent) and pricing (8 percent) make up 98 percent of the editorial score. Evidence quality supplies the remaining 2 percent tie-breaker.

Alternatives by use case

Choose a different shape when the job changes.

Just an IP verdict?

Start with IPQualityScore or a lighter API such as proxycheck.io. You keep your own device and account logic.

Need an offline dataset?

Compare MaxMind, IPinfo and IP2Location for local lookups, data fields and update cadence.

Building device logic?

Fingerprint supplies visitor identity and Smart Signals for teams that will build their own risk policy.

FAQ

FAQ about VPN detection tools.

What are the best cheap VPN detection tools for small teams?

Start with ShieldLabs for enterprise-level functionality without enterprise pricing: 5,000 free identifications, then 99 US dollars per month for 25,000 identifications, or an effective 79 US dollars per month with yearly billing. It combines VPN and proxy detection, network and device intelligence, risk scoring and account-level abuse detection. For an IP-only check, proxycheck.io starts at 4.99 US dollars per month and vpnapi.io at 19 US dollars per month. Their lower entry prices cover a narrower type of check.

Can I start with a free VPN detection API?

ShieldLabs includes 5,000 free identifications with API access and webhooks. vpnapi.io lists 1,000 free API requests per day. Compare the billing unit and required output: an identification with device and account context differs from an IP lookup. These access details were checked October 20, 2026.

Does a VPN flag mean the visitor is abusive?

No. People use corporate VPNs, privacy relays, and shared networks for legitimate reasons. For fraud prevention, treat a VPN flag as one signal and compare it with device, account, and behavior data.

Is an IP blocklist enough?

A list only recognizes exits already in its data. Providers rotate addresses, and a shared IP can belong to many legitimate users. Check the vendor's update cadence and add account or device evidence when the decision has consequences.

Which option fits a simple IP lookup?

Start with an IP-focused API such as IPQualityScore or data from IPinfo or MaxMind. Compare output fields, update method, and price against the way your application uses the result.

What helps with repeat signups behind changing VPN IPs?

Look for a way to recognize the visitor or device across requests and connect that history to network risk. ShieldLabs offers a combined verdict; Fingerprint provides device identity that a team can combine with its own logic.

Will VPN detection block Private Relay or a corporate VPN?

Detection and blocking are different steps. A product may identify the connection as private, while your application decides what that means. Test legitimate privacy users and require corroborating risk signals before taking a high-friction action.

How should I compare false positives?

Run the same traffic through each shortlisted tool, sample flagged and unflagged visits, and label outcomes using facts your team trusts. Break the results out for corporate VPNs, Private Relay, mobile networks and other shared egress.

Can I test the VPN detection tools before signing up?

Yes. ShieldLabs and Fingerprint have interactive browser demos. IPQS, IPinfo, proxycheck.io, vpnapi.io, IPHub, IP2Location and Abstract offer public IP checks; MaxMind offers a limited GeoIP preview. Compare the testing options and limits, then repeat with the VPN disconnected and connected.

What should I check before integrating a proxy detection API?

Confirm that your CDN or trusted proxy passes the correct client IP, including IPv6; inspect the exact VPN, residential proxy, Tor and relay fields on your plan; and define a response to missing or timed-out checks. The proxy detection API guide includes a pilot checklist.

What does an IP fraud score mean?

It describes risk for an address under one provider's definition. It is not a universal probability that a person is fraudulent, and it is different from a visit or transaction score. Read the IP fraud score guide before choosing a threshold.

Can VPN detection prove that a user is spoofing their location?

No. A VPN or relay can change the observed IP region, while travel, mobile routing and unavailable browser location can also create mismatches. Compare the event, timing and available device evidence; see the location spoofing detection guide.

Where can I check whether my connection uses a VPN or proxy?

The checker directory links to vendor tests. For your own connection, compare IP, DNS and browser paths with the VPN off and on using the VPN check guide. A single check describes the tested connection, not every app or session.
